What you need to do.
If you have updated your browser to the latest version recently, the switch will be transparent to you, requiring no effort at all. Here are the browsers we recommend using for webmail:
- Internet Explorer 7 or later
- Firefox 2 or later
- Safari 3
- Chrome (new browser from Google)
If you DON'T have one of these versions, please take the time to upgrade to a more recent browser before Wednesday, November 11 to ensure you'll be able to take advantage of new Webmail. Your new Webmail application will be at the same address as the old.
When is the update happening?
The new Webmail will update Wednesday, November 11. However, until November 30, users will be given the option to continue to use the old version of Webmail if they wish to, while they get used to the new version. On November 30 the old Webmail will no longer be available.
IMPORTANT NOTE: After November 11, any changes to contacts, groups and settings will be lost if they are not made in the new Webmail.
Other things to note.
Default identities. The new Webmail supports only one mail identity (our current Webmail stores these under the "My Addresses" tab). When we switch over to the new version, we will only be able to keep the "default" identity. Check your settings to make sure your default identity is the one you want moved.
Address book, contacts and groups. The new Webmail has a clearer separation between groups and contacts. Make sure all contacts in your current Webmail have a single valid email address. If you have multiple addresses for a contact, create an address book group instead. We may not be able to accurately migrate address book entries with multiple email addresses or invalid addresses.
Sent mail. The new Webmail uses a "Sent" folder rather than a "Sent-mail" folder. After switching, you will have both folders. If you are no longer using the old Webmail you can safely move messages from your old "Sent-Mail" folder to the new "Sent" folder and delete the "Sent-Mail" folder safely.
Unsupported systems.
Users of Windows 95/98 or Macintosh OS 8 or 9, may not be able to get a recent enough browser to use the new interface. Such users may have to move to using an email application to access their mail by POP or IMAP.
Smart phones and the new Webmail.
The new interface is a little unwieldly for use via a smart phone browser, though it does work. Our advice to smart phone users is to use the mail applications integrated with their phone to access their account via IMAP.
